The Mekong Institute (MI) will organize a regional seminar on Water Energy Development and Environmental Protection in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), on March 21-23, 2012 in Phom Penh, Cambodia.
The GMS has arrived at a crossroads in meeting the needs and keeping the balances – whereas hydropower presents great economic and energy gains, at the same time, concerns have intensified over the potential cumulative impacts on the environment and people’s livelihoods in the Mekong Basin.
Therefore, a seminar, sponsored by the People’s Republic of China, will be set-up to address this pressing issue. The event goes under the theme: “Meeting Development Needs and Keeping Ecological Balance”, and aims at gathering institutions involved in sustainable hydropower and environmental protection in the GMS region, to promote regional cooperation for the sustainable management of the growing number of hydropower projects.
The seminar will be a platform for discussion on regional experiences, making all institutions share best practices in all stages of planning and implementation while in turn developing regional technical knowledge on this complex matter.
MI wishes to invite state agencies, private enterprises and civil society who are directly involved in sustainable hydropower and environmental protection in the GMS to this regional seminar and structured learning visit.
The three-day seminar will consist of panel presentations, group discussions and field visits to successful integrated water resource management projects in Cambodia.
